In this week's Lady Boss Inspiration, I'm talking to Holly Gillen. I suggest you also check out last week's interview with Cara Alwill Leyba.
I came across Holly Gillen on YouTube after Amber McCue, another entrepreneur I admire, followed her there. Holly is a rockstar. After working behind the camera, she decided to learn to get comfortable in front of the camera. Now she works helping entrepreneurs use video to grow their businesses.
Here, she answers my questions about life and business.
Holly Gillen, Your Go-To Video Gal, Answers Questions About Life & Business
Why are you in the business you're in?
My mentor told me years ago, "Do what you love and you'll never work another day in your life." I truly love what I do. I love helping people step into their spotlight and harness the power of video. I love seeing that shift from fearful to fearless and from confused to confident.
Do you have a team? If so, what have you delegated to others?
I've used VA's in the past on special projects, but I handle almost everything myself.
How do you manage all the stuff you have to get done in your business?
I focus on what's essential and handle one thing at a time. It doesn't hurt that I am really efficient, and one of my alternative strengths is creating systems and streamlining.
What was the last goal (big or small) you achieved?
The last goal I achieved was hosting a very successful video challenge for my audience. Over the course of 5 days, there were 317 videos submitted with the winner of the grand prize won by sumitting 45 videos in just 5 days!
And then I hear things like this:
I just wanted to give a shout out to Holly Gillen, because she is totally ROCKIN' the boots off her #1min1take video challenge. Like, seriously.
I decided to join the challenge to help myself ease back into work, and it was PERFECT. The challenge had such great energy, and it was super easy and FUN. Because, #1min1take. It's a no-brainer.
And I want to do more. And more. And more. And I'm doing the next one. And I've been re-vamping my YouTube channel, too. Thanks for the motivation, sister!!
But the best part was just watching your community grow and watching your video VIP's kill it! So proud of you, Holly. All of the passion you put into work is paying off. Woohooooo.
How do you define success?
"Success to me is when I can take someone who is fearful of video and turn them into someone who loves using video."
How has your mindset had to change to allow your success?
It's always a work in progress. Shifting my mindset from work is hard and work shouldn't be fun to work is easy and fun.
Who or what resources have helped you grow the mindset that enables you to succeed?
There have been so many people who I have been lucky to have in my life that have helped. First and foremost being my husband, he is my number one. I've also been part of some long standing mastermind groups where I get to chat and bounce ideas off some of my favorite people.
What does your life look like now?
Life now is much more focused. I know who I want to help, why and how to make it happen.
How is it different from your life when you started your business?
"When I got started I didn't even know what I didn't know. But good thing I'm a fast learner."
What matters most in your life? How do you make time for what matters most?
Relationships matter most to me in my life. My relationships with my family, friends, clients, peers, mentors and myself. I make the time by focusing on what matters, what's essential in all areas of my life.
What do you like to do in your "downtime"? How do you give yourself space to be away from your business?
Spending time with all of my favorite peeps. I love games, board games, card games, all kinds of games. I love to play paintball, poker, participate in whacky runs, do anything outdoors. My husband and I love to try new things and we recently learned how to shoot archery and took a helicopter around NYC.
"I know spending time away from my business makes me a much better business owner."
