Encouraging Others To Invest In Themselves

"If you aren’t willing to invest in yourself, then don’t expect anyone else to invest in you."

I feel incredibly awkward when people repeat this phrase. I wonder who we think we're actually helping when we say it.

Is it said because we as entrepreneurs assume that just because someone hasn't invested with us that they don't ever invest in themselves?

Or because we assume that you have to invest at a specific level?

Or because we hear "I've never invested" from someone who is actually saying "I don't give myself credit for all of the smaller financial investments or the time investments I've made because I've never had 1000s to invest in 1:1 coaching"?

As you can see, it's often said from a presumptuous place, or from not really listening for the truth from a prospect.

If we want to encourage others to invest in themselves, we must give them an opportunity to find their confidence. I appreciate a good ass-kicking every now and then but if we believe that each of us has the answers inside, why don't we ask questions instead of admonishing?

Ask: What level of investment would feel like a stretch for you? Give your community opportunities to invest at levels that are a slight stretch for them.

Or if you really want to drive the point home, share YOUR story of financial struggle overturned by the right investment. These stories, told well, stick in people's minds and leave a better taste in their mouths than the admonishing statement above.

Sometimes I feel like people repeat this because they're upset they're not making the money they want (whether or not they've invested) and other times it feels like it's just something you're saying because you see others say it and feel like you need to share some "value." Knock it off.

Knock it off.

Instead, do as I suggested and:

Ask compassionate questions that get your followers to admit to themselves it's time to invest further,

Tell stories of your learning around this.

Oh, and always trust-
Your truth unlocks a whole big crazy cool life. Share if you dare!

With fervent hopes you'll return the love (truth),
